FoodAlt calculates comparisons from published scientific databases, primarily including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) FoodData Central. While we strive for extreme mathematical fidelity:
- Biological Variability: Whole foods naturally vary in nutrient density due to cultivar differences, soil geology, sun exposure, harvest timing, storage duration, and cooking methods.
- Laboratory Assay Limitations: Certain micronutrients may be unanalyzed in specific reference samples, which FoodAlt flags as unmeasured rather than zero.
- No Guarantee of Universal Equivalence: Recommended food alternatives are mathematical models based on target nutrient density and should be assessed within your personal lifestyle context.
3. Acceptable Use & Prohibited Conduct
You may use FoodAlt for personal, educational, research, and non-commercial dietary exploration. You agree not to:
- Deploy automated scrapers, bots, or crawlers that generate excessive requests or impair service availability.
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or compromise the security of our website servers or API endpoints.
- Misrepresent FoodAlt data in misleading medical, curative, or diagnostic marketing claims.
- Circumvent or tamper with rate limiters or security protocols.
4. Intellectual Property
The FoodAlt name, logo, visual branding, design systems, algorithms, comparison software, and interface layouts are the intellectual property of FoodAlt.
Underlying public domain agricultural composition datasets (such as USDA FoodData Central) remain in the public domain and are cited accordingly in our Methodology page.
5. User Submissions & Correction Feedback
When you submit feedback, messages, or suggested data corrections via our Data Corrections form, you grant FoodAlt a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to review, verify, publish, and integrate such data corrections into our public database.
